Steve Johannes started working as a finisher in 1969, while attending college in California. Over a period of eight years, with a 2-year hiatus to Iowa to finish college, he became a journeymen finisher and cabinetmaker.

In 1978, Steve along with Rene' Baril, opened their shop and specialized in cabinetry, finish carpentry and residential remodeling. Wanting to pursue more cabinetmaking options, Steve opened his own shop in late 1979. The firm held California licenses, B-General Building Contractor and C-6 Cabinet and Millwork. Over the next 10 years he specialized in custom high-end residential and commercial woodworking projects.

In 1989, Steve moved the business to Coralville, Iowa, close to his alma mater, The University of Iowa. Over the next 11 years, Johannes Architectural Woodworking has established its niche as being the premier specialty woodworking firm in Eastern Iowa. The majority of projects being in Iowa, they have also shipped custom projects to Kansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, California and New York City's Fifth Avenue.

Recently, Johannes Architectural Woodworking has won two national awards from Custom Woodworking Business. In 1996 they were awarded Honorable mention for the bar at Malone's Pub in Iowa City, Iowa. They followed with a First Place award in 1998 for another bar at The Sports Column in Coralville, Iowa.

The goal of all of us at Johannes Architectural Woodworking is to repeatedly strive to deliver fine woodworking that continually exceeds expectations.
